"A wisely chosen illustration is essential to fasten truth upon the mind, it shows what photographs cannot show, and and says what words cannot say."
Long live the pencil! HuntingTown was born out of my love for drawing and sketching and I'm proud to say it's something I'm still doing today. In a world where Photoshop is king of design, being able to create something hand drawn, unique and utterly bespoke truly stands out. Practically all of the mocks you'll see from me will be from drawings in my sketchpad, scanned in and enhanced on the computer. Being skilled in both the traditional mediums of illustration and the more modern computer aided design means that I can mix media to create some really stunning artworks. When working on illustrations I generally create everything on separate layers, meaning that if you want to change a colour, no worries, I can just grab that layer and edit it on the computer. Working like this means you have a massive degree of flexibility in a field that once upon a time, would have meant an expensive redraw from scratch.
A phrase I utter on a regular basis is "don't worry, if we can't find it, I'll just draw it", meaning that I don't rely on pre-made vectors, or stock images to create my works. If you know exactly what you want, then that's exactly what you'll get. Realistically placing hand drawn figures in a photograph or even painting out that irritating feature on that otherwise perfect image; illustration has it's place in every aspect of design work.
I'm really passionate about hand crafted illustration and try and spend a bit of everyday with a pencil, pen, brush or Wacom stylus in my hand. Illustration is such an important tool at HuntingTown that I really struggle to see how other design firms can get by without it, even if it's only used for mock-ups, it's incredibly useful to be able to go from brain straight to paper with no middle man.
